Looking for an Electrician in Bengeo?
Electrician in Bengeo for Rewires, EV Chargers and Electrical Work
We recently carried out an EICR for a couple who had just bought a home in Bengeo. The property had plenty of character, but the electrical installation told a different story. We found an old rewirable fuse board, no RCD protection, ageing cabling, lighting circuits without an earth and inadequate protective bonding.
The EICR came back Unsatisfactory, with nine C2 observations. Rather than spending money repairing individual faults on an installation that was already well past its best, the homeowners chose to have the property rewired properly before settling in.
That type of work is a good example of what we regularly come across in and around Bengeo. JJB Electrical Ltd carries out everything from full house rewires and consumer unit upgrades to EV charger installations, EICRs, fault finding and smaller electrical jobs. We have around 20 years of electrical experience, more than 200 customer reviews, and we are NAPIT registered, TrustMark endorsed, a Which? Trusted Trader, MCS certified and Trading Standards approved.
Electrical Work We Carry Out in Bengeo
If you are looking for an Electrician in Bengeo, we can help with both planned electrical improvements and faults that need investigating.
A large proportion of our work locally falls into five main areas.
House Rewiring
Older properties can have electrical installations that have been altered several times over the years without the original wiring ever being properly upgraded.
Some of the issues we regularly encounter include ageing cabling, lighting circuits without a circuit protective conductor, old fuse boards, poor DIY alterations and inadequate earthing or bonding.
A rewire does not automatically mean ripping everything out because a house is old. We test the installation first and look at its overall condition.
Where the wiring has reached the end of its useful life, however, continually repairing individual faults can become a false economy.
A Bengeo Rewire We Recently Completed
One Bengeo project started when the new homeowners asked us to carry out an EICR following concerns raised during the purchase of the property.
Our testing identified:
- An old rewirable fuse board using fuse wire.
- No modern RCD protection.
- Ageing cabling with deteriorating insulation in parts of the installation.
- Lighting circuits without an earth conductor.
- Missing or inadequate main protective bonding.
- Only two sockets across the ground floor, resulting in heavy reliance on extension leads.
- Nine C2 observations on the completed EICR.
Because the floors were going to be lifted as part of other work at the property, it made far more sense to rewire the house at the same time rather than repair individual problems.
We installed new twin and earth cabling throughout and fitted a new 18th Edition consumer unit with individual RCBO protection and surge protection.
We also added additional double sockets where the homeowners actually needed them, installed interlinked mains smoke and heat alarms, upgraded the protective bonding and carefully lifted and replaced floorboards to minimise unnecessary damage.
Once the work was complete, we fully tested the installation, issued an Electrical Installation Certificate and notified the work through NAPIT.
The entire installation went from an Unsatisfactory EICR to a modern, fully certified electrical system within seven days.
Consumer Unit and Fuse Board Upgrades
We still come across properties around Bengeo and Hertford with older rewirable fuse boards or consumer units offering considerably less protection than a modern installation.
Replacing an old board can provide individual RCBO protection for circuits together with surge protection.
Before replacing a consumer unit, we test the existing circuits. This is important because fitting modern protective devices can sometimes reveal faults that an older fuse board was not capable of detecting.
We would rather find those problems before changing the board than install a new consumer unit and leave you wondering why a circuit keeps tripping afterwards.
EV Charger Installation in Bengeo
EV charger installations are one of our most requested services in Bengeo.
Before quoting properly, we look at more than simply where the charger will fit on the wall.
We consider the position of the consumer unit, available electrical capacity, cable route, earthing arrangements and where you normally park the vehicle.
Cable routing is particularly important. Where possible, we look for a route that keeps the installation neat and avoids unnecessary visible cabling across the front of the property.
We can also check whether any electrical upgrades should be carried out at the same time, such as improvements to the consumer unit or main protective bonding.
As an MCS certified electrical contractor, we also work extensively with modern electrical and renewable technologies, so EV charging forms part of our wider electrical expertise rather than being treated as a standalone accessory installation.
Electrical Installation Condition Reports
An EICR provides a detailed assessment of the condition and safety of an existing electrical installation.
We carry out EICRs for:
- Homeowners.
- People buying older properties.
- Landlords.
- Letting agents.
- Businesses.
- Customers planning renovations or electrical upgrades.
We test the installation rather than simply looking at the consumer unit.
That can include checking protective devices, insulation resistance, earthing, bonding, circuit continuity and whether circuits have appropriate additional protection.
The Bengeo rewire above is a good example of why this matters. The old fuse board was an obvious warning sign, but testing also identified issues with the lighting circuits, bonding and existing cabling.
Fault Finding and Smaller Electrical Jobs
Not every job needs to be a major project.
We also carry out smaller electrical jobs throughout Bengeo, Hertford, Ware, Wareside, Hertingfordbury, Chapmore End, Stapleford and Wadesmill.
These can include:
- Replacing light fittings.
- Adding or replacing sockets.
- Outside lighting.
- Fault finding.
- Circuits that keep tripping.
- Loss of power to part of a property.
- Electrical alterations.
- Replacement switches and accessories.
- Testing suspected electrical faults.
Intermittent faults are particularly important to investigate properly.
If part of your home occasionally loses power, a circuit trips without an obvious reason or an electrical accessory is showing signs of overheating, during our fault finding we will test the circuit and try to identify the cause rather than simply replacing the most obvious component.
Electrical Problems We Commonly Find Around Bengeo
Some of the recurring problems we see in established properties around Bengeo include electrical installations that have simply not kept pace with the way the house is now used.
Old or Tired Wiring
Older cabling does not automatically require replacement purely because of its age.
We look at its condition, test results, alterations and whether it remains suitable for continued use.
Where insulation is deteriorating, earthing arrangements are inadequate or numerous alterations have accumulated over the years, more extensive work may be necessary.
Rewirable Fuse Boards and Limited RCD Protection
An older fuse board may still be in service even though the rest of the household has changed dramatically.
Modern homes contain considerably more electronic equipment, appliances and electrical loads, including increasingly common EV chargers.
We can inspect the existing installation and explain whether an upgrade would be sensible rather than simply recommending replacement because the board looks old.
Earthing and Bonding Problems
Main protective bonding and effective earthing are fundamental parts of electrical safety.
We check these when carrying out relevant electrical work, particularly before major upgrades such as a new consumer unit or EV charger.
Circuits Losing Power
Intermittent faults can be frustrating because everything may appear to work normally by the time an electrician arrives.
We use electrical test equipment and systematic fault finding to narrow down the problem rather than relying on guesswork.

Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly can you attend an electrical job in Bengeo?
We aim to respond as soon as possible and will give you a realistic idea of availability when you contact us. For urgent electrical faults, tell us exactly what is happening so we can advise you on the safest next step.
How much does an electrician in Bengeo cost?
The cost depends on the work involved, access, materials and whether testing or fault finding is required. We prefer to understand the job properly before giving a price rather than quoting a figure that changes once we arrive.
Do you install EV chargers in Bengeo?
Yes. EV chargers are one of our most requested services locally. We assess the existing electrical installation, charger location, cable route, earthing arrangements and supply requirements before recommending the installation.
Do you carry out EICRs on older houses?
Yes. We regularly inspect older properties where there may be rewirable fuse boards, limited RCD protection, ageing wiring or historic alterations. We test the installation and explain any observations and classifications clearly once the inspection is complete.
Does an old fuse board mean my house needs rewiring?
Not necessarily. We test the circuits and assess the condition of the installation before recommending a rewire. In some properties a consumer unit upgrade may be appropriate, while installations with widespread ageing or defective wiring may require more extensive work.
Are you registered and insured?
We are NAPIT registered, TrustMark endorsed, a Which? Trusted Trader, MCS certified and Trading Standards approved. We are also fully insured for the electrical work we undertake.
Do you take on small electrical jobs?
Yes. Alongside rewires, EICRs, consumer units and EV chargers, we carry out smaller jobs such as light fitting replacements, sockets, switches, outdoor lighting and electrical fault finding in Bengeo and the surrounding area.
