Electrician in Thundridge for EV Chargers, Rewires, Solar and Electrical Work

One of the more interesting electrical jobs we have carried out in Thundridge was at a converted Coach House. Properties like this can have fantastic original features, but the electrical installation can sometimes be a mixture of older conversion wiring and additions made at different times.

The owners contacted JJB Electrical Ltd following an EICR. When we inspected the installation, we found ageing and damaged wiring on parts of the property. Importantly, the whole house did not need rewiring. We identified the circuits that required replacement and carried out a partial rewire of six circuits, using new twin and earth cable and steel wire armoured cable where required.

That approach kept the cost and disruption down, helped protect the character of the property and meant the owners were not paying to replace wiring that remained suitable for continued use. It is a good example of how we approach electrical work: test first, establish what actually needs doing and then explain the options clearly.

JJB Electrical Ltd has around 20 years of electrical experience. We carry out everything from EV charger installations and house rewires to solar and battery storage, consumer unit upgrades, EICRs, downlights, fault finding and smaller electrical jobs.

A Real Partial Rewire at a Coach House in Thundridge

The Coach House project started following an Electrical Installation Condition Report.

During our inspection and testing, we identified ageing cabling together with damaged sections of the existing wiring. In converted and older properties, cables can run through roof spaces, walls, timber structures and areas that are difficult to inspect without proper testing.

Damaged wiring is not something we recommend leaving simply because the lights or sockets still appear to work. Deteriorated insulation or exposed conductors can increase the risk of electric shock, short circuits, overheating and fire. Therefore we carried out a partial rewire.

Why We Recommended a Partial Rewire

The important part of this job was working out what did not need replacing.

The remainder of the electrical installation was in reasonable condition, so we did not recommend stripping out perfectly serviceable circuits just to make the project into a full rewire.

Instead, we replaced the six affected circuits.

We installed new twin and earth cabling and steel wire armoured cable where appropriate. Cable routes were planned carefully to reduce unnecessary disturbance to the Coach House's existing features.

We protected floors and furnishings throughout the work and kept the property clean as the job progressed.

Once the electrical work was complete, we tested and certified the new installation and notified the relevant work through NAPIT where required.

The result was safe, fully tested wiring on the circuits that needed attention without the owners having to pay for a complete house rewire they did not need.

EV Charger Installation in Thundridge

EV chargers are one of our most requested electrical services in Thundridge and the surrounding Ware and Hertford area.

We do not treat an EV charger as simply another appliance that can be connected to the nearest available circuit.

Before installing one, we assess the existing electrical installation and consider:

  • The position and condition of the consumer unit.
  • The property's electrical supply.
  • Earthing arrangements.
  • Main protective bonding.
  • Where the vehicle is normally parked.
  • The proposed charger position.
  • The cable route between the electrical supply and charger.
  • The protective devices required for the installation.

Cable routing is particularly important.

A perfectly functional installation can still look poor if a cable has simply been clipped across the front of a property without considering other options.

Where possible, we look for a practical route that keeps the installation neat while maintaining the correct electrical protection.

If we identify something that should be upgraded before the charger is installed, such as bonding or part of the existing consumer unit arrangement, we will explain why.

We do not automatically recommend replacing a consumer unit simply because you want an EV charger.

Solar and Battery Storage in Thundridge

We also install solar PV and battery storage systems for homeowners looking to generate, store and make better use of electricity at home.

Some customers want solar panels and battery storage installed together. Others already have solar and want to add a battery, while some properties may be more suited to battery storage without solar.

There is no benefit in recommending the same system to every house.

We look at factors such as:

  • Current electricity consumption.
  • When electricity is being used.
  • Available roof space for solar.
  • Existing electrical installation.
  • Suitable inverter and battery positions.
  • Cable routes.
  • Future electrical demand.
  • EV charging requirements.

For customers with an electric vehicle, looking at EV charging, solar and battery storage together can also make sense because each can have an impact on the way electricity is used within the property.

JJB Electrical Ltd is MCS certified, allowing us to provide compliant renewable energy installations alongside our traditional electrical work.

We can therefore look at the property as a complete electrical installation rather than treating the solar, battery and EV charger as unrelated systems.

House Rewires and Partial Rewires

Older wiring does not automatically mean a house needs rewiring.

When we are asked to assess an older property, we test the installation and look at the condition of individual circuits.

Sometimes one section has been rewired relatively recently while another part of the property is considerably older.

This was exactly why a partial rewire made sense at the Coach House.

Where only certain circuits are deteriorated or damaged, replacing those circuits may be more sensible than rewiring the whole property.

At other properties we find more widespread problems, such as deteriorating insulation, lighting circuits without an earth, outdated alterations or faults across multiple circuits. In those circumstances, a complete rewire may offer better value than repeatedly repairing individual problems.

We will explain which situation applies to your property.

Consumer Unit and Fuse Board Upgrades

We still find older fuse boards in properties around Thundridge, Ware and the surrounding villages.

Some have rewirable fuse wire and little or no RCD protection.

A modern consumer unit can provide individual RCBO protection to circuits together with surge protection.

Before replacing a consumer unit, however, we test the existing installation.

This matters because modern protective devices can identify faults that an older fuse board may not have detected.

We would rather identify an existing circuit fault before fitting the new board and explain it properly than replace the consumer unit and leave the customer wondering why a circuit will no longer stay on.

EICRs in Thundridge

We carry out Electrical Installation Condition Reports for homeowners, landlords, letting agents and businesses.

An EICR involves inspection and electrical testing to assess whether an installation is suitable for continued use.

Problems we may identify include:

  • Ageing or damaged wiring.
  • Inadequate earthing.
  • Missing or inadequate bonding.
  • Lack of appropriate RCD protection.
  • Circuit faults.
  • Damaged electrical accessories.
  • Previous alterations that require further investigation.

The Coach House partial rewire is a good example of why proper testing matters.

The purpose was not simply to produce a certificate. The inspection helped identify exactly which parts of the installation required attention and which parts could remain.

If observations are raised on an EICR, we explain what they mean rather than simply handing you a list of electrical codes.

Downlights and Smaller Electrical Jobs

You do not need to be planning a major project to call us.

We also carry out everyday electrical jobs throughout Thundridge and the surrounding villages.

These can include:

If something keeps tripping or a circuit occasionally loses power, we use electrical testing and systematic fault finding to try to establish the cause.

Replacing the first accessory that looks suspicious is not the same as finding the fault.

Electrical Problems We Commonly See Locally

There are several issues we regularly encounter when inspecting established properties around Thundridge and the wider Hertfordshire area.

Old or Tired Wiring

Electrical cables do not need replacement purely because of their age.

Condition and test results matter.

Where we find deteriorating insulation, damaged wiring or multiple previous alterations, further work may be necessary.

Rewirable Fuse Boards and Limited RCD Protection

An older fuse board does not automatically make an installation unsafe or mean a house needs rewiring.

It does, however, often indicate that the electrical installation would benefit from being assessed, particularly where modern RCD protection is limited or absent.

Earthing and Bonding

We check earthing and protective bonding when carrying out relevant electrical work.

These are especially important when considering consumer unit replacements, EV chargers and other significant additions to an existing installation.

Circuits Losing Power or Tripping

Intermittent faults can sometimes be more difficult to locate than a circuit that has stopped working completely.

Loose connections, damaged cables and deteriorating accessories are some of the possible causes.

We test the circuit methodically rather than guessing.

What Happens When You Contact Us?

If you are looking for an Electrician in Thundridge, the first step is simply to tell us what you need.

For a smaller electrical job, photographs and a short conversation may give us enough information to advise you.

For projects such as rewires, EV chargers, solar and battery storage or consumer unit upgrades, we may arrange to inspect the property so we can look at the existing electrical installation and proposed cable routes.

For faults, we may need to carry out testing before we can tell you exactly what needs repairing.

We will explain what we find and the options available.

If part of your installation can safely remain, we will say so. The Coach House project is a good example of this. Six circuits required replacement, but that did not mean the customer needed to pay for an unnecessary full rewire.

Whether you need an Electrician in Thundridge for an EV charger, solar and battery storage, an EICR, a rewire or a smaller electrical job, our aim is to give you sensible advice based on what your property actually needs.

FAQs

How much does an electrician in Thundridge cost?

It depends on the work required, materials, access and whether testing or fault finding is involved. We prefer to understand the job first rather than give a headline price that changes once the actual work is assessed.

Do you install EV chargers in Thundridge?

Yes. EV chargers are one of our most requested services locally. We assess the existing consumer unit, electrical supply, earthing, bonding, charger position and cable route before recommending an installation.

Do you install solar panels and battery storage?

Yes. JJB Electrical Ltd installs solar PV and battery storage and is MCS certified. We can assess solar and battery storage alongside your wider electrical requirements, including EV charging where relevant.

Can you partially rewire my house rather than doing a full rewire?

Yes, if testing shows the remaining wiring is suitable for continued use. At the Coach House in Thundridge we replaced six affected circuits rather than recommending a complete rewire that the property did not need.

Does an old fuse board mean my house needs rewiring?

No. We assess the condition of the circuits rather than making a decision based solely on the age of the fuse board. Depending on the test results, you may need a consumer unit upgrade, individual repairs, a partial rewire or more extensive work.

Do you carry out EICRs for landlords and homeowners?

Yes. We carry out EICRs for homeowners, landlords, letting agents and businesses around Thundridge and the surrounding area. If we identify problems, we explain the observations and what remedial work is actually required.

How quickly can you attend?

We aim to respond as soon as possible and will give you a realistic indication of availability when you contact us. If you have an electrical fault, tell us what is happening so we can advise you on the appropriate next step.
