LED Office Lighting in Cheshunt: A Recent Office Upgrade
We recently visited an office in Cheshunt to replace its older ceiling panel lights with modern LED fittings. The business wanted to reduce electricity running costs and improve the quality of light throughout the offices.
I'm Jamie from JJB Electrical LTD. I've worked in the electrical industry for around 20 years. Across Cheshunt and the surrounding areas, we still see plenty of offices using older, non-LED lighting. Those fittings can use more electricity than modern replacements, particularly when they are switched on throughout the working day.
Our recent job is a good example of why businesses consider upgrading their lighting, even when their existing fittings still work.
Replacing Older Office Panel Lights in Cheshunt

The customer asked us to upgrade the existing office panel lighting to LEDs. Their priorities were straightforward: lower electricity consumption and better quality lighting for the people using the offices.
When recommending new office lighting, we consider how each space is used. A room full of computer workstations can have different lighting needs from a corridor, storeroom or reception area. The right light output, colour temperature and glare control all matter.
This Cheshunt project focused on replacing older lighting with suitable modern LED panels. If you're considering similar work, the first step is to assess the existing fittings and the ceiling they sit in.
How Much Could LED Office Lighting Save?
Modern LED panels can use considerably less electricity than older fluorescent fittings. The potential savings depend on the current lighting, replacement products, hours of operation and your electricity tariff.
For illustration, consider an office with 20 older fluorescent fittings drawing approximately 72 watts each, including control gear. Replacing these with 30-watt LED panels would change the combined lighting load from 1,440 watts to 600 watts, a reduction of about 58%.
| Example | Older fittings | LED panels |
| Number of fittings | 20 | 20 |
| Power per fitting | 72 W | 30 W |
| Example | Older Fittings | LED Panels |
| Total Lighting Load | 1,440 W | 600W |
| Annual use at 2,500 hours | 3,600 kWh | 1,500 kWh |
In this example, the office would save around 2,100 kWh each year. At an illustrative electricity rate of 25p per kWh, that is approximately £525 per year before considering installation costs. These are example calculations, not recorded measurements from our Cheshunt project.
If we visit your office, we can check the actual wattages and estimate the likely savings more accurately.
Choosing the Right Colour Temperature
One point we always discuss with customers is the colour of their new lighting. Choosing the brightest-looking fitting isn't always the best solution for an office.
- Warm white: 3000K
Warm white produces a softer, slightly yellow light. It can suit reception and waiting areas where a more relaxed atmosphere is wanted.
- Neutral white: 4000K
For many general office spaces, 4000K is a sensible starting point. It provides a clean, neutral appearance that often works well around desks and meeting areas.
- Cool daylight: 6000K to 6500K
Cooler colour temperatures produce a noticeably blue-white light. They may suit some environments, but we wouldn't recommend them for every office without considering how the room is used.
We also consider the level and spread of illumination, reflections on screens and glare. Where relevant, the lighting design should take account of BS EN 12464-1 for indoor workplaces.
Will LED Panels Fit an Existing Suspended Grid Ceiling?
Many offices in Cheshunt have suspended ceilings with fluorescent panels fitted into the grid. Modern LED panels are available in common sizes, including 600 mm by 600 mm, 1200 mm by 300 mm and 1200 mm by 600 mm.
In many cases, we can use compatible LED panels without replacing the whole ceiling. Before recommending a fitting, we check the grid opening, support arrangements, available space, wiring and the manufacturer's installation instructions. A suitable LED driver must also be accommodated.
Every office is different, so we would confirm compatibility during a site visit rather than assume that any replacement panel will fit.
Better Quality Lighting for the Working Day
Reducing running costs was only one of the customer's reasons for arranging our Cheshunt office lighting upgrade. They also wanted a better quality of light in the rooms where people worked.
Uneven light, glare and failing fluorescent fittings can make an office less comfortable. When choosing replacements, we look beyond the power rating. Lumens indicate the light output, while the fitting's optical design affects how light spreads across desks and walkways.
Glare is especially important where staff use computer screens. Some office luminaires are specified for low-glare applications, but the suitability of a finished installation depends on the room layout and lighting design, not a product label alone.
We also pay attention to the quality of the LED driver, matching colour temperatures and the warranty offered by the manufacturer.
How Long Do Commercial LED Panels Last?
Many commercial LED panels have stated operating lifetimes in the region of 30,000 to 50,000 hours, while some products are rated higher. A 50,000-hour rating would equate to around 19 years at 10 hours per day, five days a week, but it isn't a guarantee that the complete fitting will operate fault-free for that long.
Rated life may describe light output maintenance. The driver, operating temperature and installation conditions can all affect how long the fitting remains serviceable. We recommend considering manufacturer support and warranties as well as the initial price.
Can LED Office Lighting Include Emergency Lighting?
Yes. Some LED panel systems can include compatible emergency lighting arrangements, while other offices may need separate emergency luminaires.
The correct arrangement depends on the building's escape routes, fire risk assessment and applicable emergency lighting requirements. We consider relevant guidance, including BS 5266-1, when discussing this work.
If your existing ceiling panels include emergency lighting, tell us before the upgrade so it can be assessed as part of the proposed design.
What to Expect From an Office Lighting Upgrade
We look at your existing fittings
We check the type and size of the lights, the condition of the relevant installation and how the office is used. We'll ask whether your priority is energy saving, improved illumination, replacing unreliable fittings or a combination of these.
We recommend suitable LED panels
We consider colour temperature, light output, glare, power consumption, compatibility with the ceiling and any need for emergency lighting or controls.
We plan access around your business
Office lighting work can affect occupied rooms. We discuss access and likely disruption beforehand so you can plan around staff and visitors.
We install, inspect and test
We isolate the relevant circuits safely, carry out the agreed installation work and complete the appropriate inspection, testing and electrical certification for the work undertaken.
Other Electrical Work for Cheshunt Offices
Alongside LED office lighting in Cheshunt, we can help with commercial electrical work, Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICRs), distribution board and consumer unit upgrades, extra sockets, rewiring and electrical maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much cheaper is LED office lighting to run?
Replacing a 72W fluorescent fitting with a 30W LED panel would reduce that fitting's electricity use by approximately 58%. We can assess your actual fittings and operating hours to estimate potential savings for your premises.
How long do LED office lights last?
Many commercial LED panels carry rated lifetimes of 30,000 to 50,000 hours or more. We recommend checking the manufacturer's stated lifetime, driver specification and warranty before choosing a product.
Are LED office panels colour switchable?
Some are. Certain models allow you to select a colour temperature such as 3000K, 4000K or 6000K during installation, while other systems offer adjustable controls. We can help you choose a suitable option for the rooms involved.
Will LED panels fit our existing grid ceiling?
Often they will, particularly where the ceiling uses common panel sizes. We check the actual openings, supports, wiring and available space before confirming that a replacement is compatible.
Can LED office panels include emergency lighting?
Yes. Compatible emergency panel options are available, and separate emergency luminaires may also be appropriate. We can review the existing arrangements and the building's requirements as part of planning the lighting upgrade.
